Fresh air. Wide-open vistas. Untouched by modern technology. Challenged by nature. Really wild, wildlife. All describe the adventure that awaits you at Goodnews River Lodge in Alaska. Goodnews River Lodge from the air... Located over 450 air miles due west of Anchorage in the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, the Lodge offers anglers inspiration, relaxation and terrific sport. "Alaska" is a Native American word meaning "great land." It has been called America's Last Frontier because much of the great land is still unsettled. This fact is very evident when you first arrive in the small village of Goodnews Bay via private charter non-stop from Anchorage to begin your adventure at Goodnews River Lodge. Our friendly staff then transports you via high-speed jet boat to our camp on the Goodnews River - a three-branch river system that courses through the 4.3 million-acre wildlife refuge. No longer are the amenities of modern living apparent or available. No phones (except for emergency use), no television, no FM radio and no outside contact - or headaches - with corporate America! For the next seven to ten days (or more depending on your excursion), your environment consists of semi-rustic living conditions, almost 24 hours of sunlight, great fishing, and the adventure of a lifetime - shared with friends you've just recently met! Jet Boats docked at Goodnews River Lodge. As soon as you dock at our camp, youre welcomed with a hot meal in the main dining hall and some much needed rest and good talk. After youve checked-in and licensed we discuss the next weeks outdoor activities. As you'll discover, the Lodge consists of a boathouse, dining hall, commercial kitchen, restroom and shower area, drying room and lodging for staff and guests. Goodnews River Lodge is completely self-sufficient! Ten guest cabins, constructed of special hi-tech weatherproof fabric designed to give protection in the extreme Arctic environment, sit closely to the Goodnews River. Each guest cabin offers the following features: Front door and cross-ventilating windows Front porch for gear storage Carpeted hardwood floor Thermostatically-controlled propane heat Electric and gas lighting Padded cots with flannel sheets and thick comforter We're proud of our rustic, adventure-filled lifestyle but we also enjoy the comforts of home. To achieve a stay as comfortable as possible in our outdoors environment, weve outfitted Goodnews River Lodge with indoor heated bathrooms complete with hot showers, sinks and toilets. After a day of wading the Goodnews River, the last thing you want to do the next morning is climb into wet clothes and gear. Our Drying Room unique to Goodnews River Lodge is available and encouraged for all our guests to use. Our Drying Room features heated air jet dryers that thoroughly dry out hanging waders, boots, and coveralls inside and out. Drying lines, suitable for shirts, sweaters, coats and anything else that cant be heat dried are also available to our guests as are storage units with shelves.B>Your days begin with steaming hot coffee served at the doorstep by the lodge hostess. After being served a breakfast of champions (everything from pancakes to eggs any style) in the Dining Hall, anglers gear-up for a full day of fishing adventure and memories to last a lifetime. There are three options for the angler in search of his or her trophy fish: choose one of three river branches, fish the tidewaters, or wade the feeder creeks. The Lodge provides one guide per two anglers. Each guide has a nose and access to some of the hottest holes for trout, grayling and all species of salmon! Once your day on the water is complete, guests return to the Lodge for a hot shower and brief rest before dinner. In the main Dining Hall, guests can enjoy hors doeuvres, refreshments and a four-course meal. Consisting of freshly baked breads, soups and salads the main entrée is served with choice of seasonal vegetable. After dinner, guests enjoy a fancy dessert and relax while swapping fish tales of the "one that got away." Guests can also tie flies, gear-up for the next day, or even try for yet another fish before retiring for the day. Imagine casting your line in one of the most unspoiled watersheds in the world today and having the fish almost fight each other to get to your line! If thats what you want then Goodnews River Lodge is the place for you. Trout and grayling and all five species of salmon are fished here. We spend a lot of time maintaining and protecting our fishery. We do this to keep the fish biting and make your adventure everything youve dreamed it should be.
Goodnews River Lodge is especially proud of our outstanding Rainbow Trout fishing. Rainbows caught on the Goodnews River typically range from 20" to 25" with an occasional 30" or ten-pound "lunker" caught every year!
Each year the Goodnews River also hosts a world-class Dolly Varden run. It is not uncommon to land fifty dollies in a day! The average dolly caught measures between 18" and 20". King Salmon are commonly caught on the fly
after a battle that may last up to two hours on the Goodnews River! Theyll weigh-in at forty pounds plus!
From late July through early August, anglers may want to fish for Pink Salmon a feisty little Salmon that is fun to hook. For those interested in Chum Salmon, weve got great holes for landing these "kaleidoscope-scaled monsters." While many anglers have heard tales of the great fighting ability found in King and Silver salmon, few know that Chum salmon are extremely aggressive fish, too. They will definitely command your attention when hooked on the end of the line... be ready for a screaming initial run! Above all, the Goodnews River is probably best known for its Silver Salmon runs. Forty fish days are not uncommon. Weighing-in at up to twenty pounds they are undoubtedly the hardest fighting of all Pacific Salmon! These fish can be caught on surface flies, providing exciting - and rewarding - top water angling.
We know how temperamental anglers can be regarding the gear they use in their quest to land the perfect fish, so all anglers are invited to bring their own gear. (We do have gear available upon request.) We provide all terminal tackle and flies, although anglers are welcome to use their own favorite fly patterns. For a nominal charge, guests may rent rods and waders. In every effort to make preparations for your wonderful Alaskan adventure at Goodnews River Lodge, we have provided you with several key sites.
